Question network with windows ME and mandrake 9.2

Hey,

All right, well i installed linux mandrake 9.2 TODAY...and the mandrake installer does partition the drives for u!.

All my printers, scanners, keyboard, drives, everything is working EXCEPT for the network!!

I have dual boot with windows xp on this computer. I have a connection via a crossover cable to a wireless base station, which connects wirelessly to my laptop..

The crossover cable goes, where the dsl cable should go in the base station, its a Dell TrueMobile base station. However the network worked perfectly with windows ME - Windows 200 and with Windows ME - Windows xp when i upgraded.

This base station has its own modem, and thus dials in by itself...the cpu has no control of when the modem is connected or not. And thus I share my 56k connection. Again it worked perfectly between (windows ME - Windows 200 and with Windows ME - Windows xp when i upgraded.). I was able to share files, and the internet connection...In my internet settings on my XP the internet connection was set to lan.

I did the same think on mandrake linux 9.2, however I cannot get the internet working when i go to mozilla, or when i go anywere.

I am a newbiew, since this is my first linux, and i installed it today and btw I LOVE IT! so please be very discriptive.

So basically my question is why doesnt my network work?

AND

What do i need to do to fix the network problem to make it work cerrectly

P.S. I'm 100% sure that the problem is not caused by the crossover cable being plugged into the dsl cable port. Im just mentioning it.

THANX!!!!
alex

Check that your ethernet card IP properties mirror what your configuration is in XP. I'm not familiar with the sort of setup you describe--I use a cable modem hooked to a NAT router/firewall. But the principle is the same, if it works under XP, then it should work under Linux since this is an IP address issue, not an OS issue--unless the driver doesn't work! =:0

im pretty sure that i have a dynamic ip address. In tcp/ip properties it says that it obtains an ip addresss automatically, however in linux...i have an ip address might this be the issue?

and mandrake said that my network card was supported, so i dont think thats the problem.
