My HOWTO: NVDriver on stock 9.2

In another thread, I created this howto, wanted to copy here for the masses. I am sure it is exactly similar to 9.1, it is almost identical to Suse 9.0 (XF86Config instead of XF86Config-4).

I installed Mandrake, performed all system and bug fix updates, then installed the nv driver.

RolledOat

1) Create a directory somewhere called NewSoftware or something like that.

2) Download this rpm to that directory
http://rpmfind.rediris.es/rpm2html/m...1mdk.i586.html

3) Start The Mandrake control center-->Software-->SoftwareMediaManager.
Select Add
Local files
Name it what you want, then add the above directory to the path.
Save.

4) Open RPM Drake
Enter 'nano' in the search line, then search
It will show up at the bottom. Click the box and then Install
(Ignore the signature warning)

5) You now have nano as a console editor (easy) and you learned how to
install new software on your system.

6) enter binutils in your search window. If it shows up, select the check box and install it.

7) Download this file
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-5336-pkg1.run

8) open a console (Start-->Terminals-->Console ) and
su - root
<passwd>
init 3

9) Log in if you need to as root

10) cd /pathtoNVfile

11) sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run
literally,
Accept the Liscence, enter...5 seconds later, done.

12) cd /etc/X11/

13) cp XF86Config-4 XF86Config-4_orig

14) nano XF86Config-4

15) Find Driver = "nv"
replace "nv" with "nvidia"

16) Find Section=Module
Make sure that
Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"
are NOT there and make sure that
Load "glx"
IS there.

NOTE: If there, simply put a '#' in front of the line. For example
Load "dri"
becomes
#Load "dri"

17) Save.

18) enter
init 5

in about 5 -10 seconds, you should see the nvidia splash screen, then the login screen, you are good to go.

i'm about to test 9.2 and i got NVIDIA card, so your How-to is interesting to me.
I got coupla questions/comments if i may.

1. WHy .run and not .rpm?
2. Both of your links don't point to any real pages
3. Which specific NVIDIA card are you reffering to in your how-to?

Thanks so much for catching that. I wouldn't have thought to follow them as a test, I know better now!

The links are being shortened by LinuxQuestions....

The nvidia driver. If this link is shortened as well...

http://www.nvidia.com/page/home
Select "Drivers", lower left of screen
Select the "Linx and Free BSD driver line"
Under Graphics drivers, NOT under nforce drivers, select "1-0.5336" (IA32)
Look at step 2, the link for NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run
Download that file.

The nano editor (NOTE: This is not required if you know vi, I just don't like telling people who have never used vi to use it)
enter the following in www.google.com
nano 1.3.1 mandrake rpm
download the first hit to the directory above.

As for run vs .rpm, it isn't an RPM that you download, it as a self extracting 'Executable'. The just called it .run, probably so people didn't try rpm -i.

I am reposting the urls to see if it happens again. I am following this post up with the list of Nvidia cards/chipsets this works for.

I fixed the links above, reposted like they were before and appear to be working, I guess we'll see if they get shortened again. Thanks again.

thanx. I got a few more questions if you don't mind.
My Mandrake 8.2 can see and configure my RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro fine, except I need to use XFree ver 3 instead of 4. That's not a problem for me. I'm going to try 9.2 soon, so will 9.2 see and configure the same vid card as easily as 8.2 did, or do I need to get and install the driver this time as per your How to? I don't plan on running any games nor I need 3-D or anything fancy.

The default driver will be fine, you ONLY need to install these drivers if you want to play high framerate games. The same video card will be just fine. It is NOT a requirement in any sense of the word to install these drivers to get Mandrake up and running with a perfectly functional desktop.

Edit: NOTE: DVD playback, you probably want these drivers installed. :edit
