MDV 2006 - vncserver no 5801

This is kind of a 2 part issue.

1. I have vncserver running as a service. I scanned the machine, and 5801 is showing that you can connect to it. My problem is that when I point a browser at the IP:5801, I get a generic "File Not Found" error. Thoughts?

2. Once that can be straighted out so it actually works correctly, how can I change the vncserver service so that it does NOT listen on 5801? I would rather have this machine NOT listen on the java port.

I realize that both these requests contradict eachother, however I am more curious why it is not working when it should be, and then I wanna disable it correctly so I don't get hack attempts, etc, etc.

Cheers!

1. Start trying from port 5800 to 5802. ¿Did you open the ports on the firewall at least for the ip you are connecting from?. Try editing /etc/sysconfig/vncservers
2. The server listens on 5800 + display for you to be able to open _with_ a java enabled browser, so you don't have to use a vnc client like: vncviewer <ip>.
Hack attempts can occur anyways no matter what port the service is on. Mind a strong password; patch vulnerabilities, tunnel over SSH, and let the server accept only connection from ip's you know or need.
Excuse my english, it's a crap.

Are you due for an upgrade?
I do not know what vnc version you have and whether there were vulnerabilities.
Same with all the other applications you might be using, unless
you kept them up to date. Consider whether you need to upgrade.

Good post above, and good advice about ssh
