ummmm .... autologin is controlled by MCC and shutdown button by the Desktop Manager (kdm for example) ... I don't know more then that.
I would probably try to reinstall.

2. Also, why was Koffice, tuxracer, and Dansguardian, (is squidguard comparable?) not on the CDs,

I'm pretty sure tuxracer and koffice are on the 3 CD set. At least tuxraces was installed automaticaly. Are you sure you checked to install them? I don't know about dansguardian..
Anyway you can install it with urpmi (google for "easy urpmi" if you don't know what urpmi is and how to configure it) or even put the CD, go to the /mnt/cdrom/media/main directory (with the mandrake cd mounted of course) and then install the packages with "rpm -Uvh <package name>"

3. Am learning how to install software with rpms, but I notice different versions #s of an app. How do I determine (from the numbering?) if an app is for a certain release version of a distro. For example, tried to load Krusader (file mgr) but there was a dependency required that did not exist ( googled all over). Then found Krusader with a different build number and it loaded fine, but even if I remembered what the numbers were, I would never have understood what I was looking at.

You should google for "Easy urpmi". Choose your distribution and the mirrors and then follow the instructions there.
This will configure urpmi to download packages specificaly built to your distro, so urpmi will solve almost all dependency problems downloading packages from the internet.
The build number just indicates if the program is newer or older ... not very important. Anything installed with urpmi should work on your computer regardless of the build number.
