MDK10 + ATI 9500 Pro + IIYAMA VM PRO 410 Refresh Rate Problem

Hi!

The past few months (!!!!) I had problems with making my monitor run in an appropriate refresh rate in Linux.

My 17 inches IIYAMA Vision Master Pro 410 monitor can easily do 100Hz at 1024x768

The problem goes as follows:

When I install a fresh copy of Mandrake 10, no 3D Acceleriation is available. However, the refresh rate at 1024x768 is 85Hz, which is acceptable.

When I install the lastest ATI Drivers for 3D Acceleration however, my refresh drops at 75Hz and it stays like that no matter what setting I give during the fgrlxconfig command!!!

Last week, I brought my PC back home (I had in in the Uni I was for the past five years) and here I have a 15 inch CTX 1569UA monitor which can do 1024x768 85Hz. I decided to connect this monitor instead. I connected it, I ran fglrxconfig and the monitor worked perfectly fine at 1024x768 85Hz!!!

After this, without turning off the PC, I disconnected the 15 inch monitor and connected the IIYAMA one! The monitor worked with 1024x768 85Hz!!
The I decided to reboot and see if it will still run like that...

But no luck...
After the rebbot the refresh was 75Hz again...

Any ideas what could be the problem???

Probably the modelines were not set up correctly (as usual) in the /etc/X11/Xf86Config-4 file. I have resolved the same problem using Knoppix. Knoppix comes with the tool ddcxinfo-knoppix which you can find
here
If you have a Knoppix already, just copy the modelines in the monitor section of the XF86Config file of Knoppix to Mandrake's. Otherwise install the package above.
Then as root type
ddcxinfo-knoppix -monitor

This will dump the necessary modelines your monitor supports, just copy them to your local XF86Config file and you will be fine.
