Latest...

During boot when it gets to Checking Internet Connection to start at boot: Modem lights flash then settle to green (both) after another 30 seconds I get FAILED and also Starting ADSL FAILED.

OK I checked /etc/ppp/peers/adsl and vpi and vci were both 0 (I told the setup UK/BT)

Anyway I changed it to 0 & 38 here's the adsl file contents below:-

Code:
noauth
noipdefault
pty "/usr/sbin/pppoa3 -e 1 -c -vpi 0 -vci 38"

sync
noaccomp
kdebug 1
nopcomp
noccp
novj
holdoff 4
maxfail 25
persist
usepeerdns
defaultroute
user "myusername"
I don't think there's anything wrong with this now but it still won't connect to the net even tho both lights stay green

Well if I were you I would keep trying different things. Perhaps the ethernet connection to the other computer is interfering somehow. Try (temporarily) unplugging it and just set up the speedtouch like I did in post #13. If that doesn't work, perhaps the speedtouchconf will after you've gone through the steps in the Mandrake Control Centre.
I read your other thread about the bootloader and installing other distros and although you must be sick of me by now, I must recommend Grub. When I used Mandrake 9.1 it installed lilo on the master boot record and I tried several other distros but I could never get lilo to boot them and Mandrake. I could only get it to boot Slackware and Windows or Mandrake and Windows. But when I came to do Linux From Scratch it uses Grub and to be cautious, before I installed it with Scratch I used the Mandrake Control Centre to change Mandrakes bootloader from lilo to Grub and that was it. The floodgates were open. Grub seems to be capable of loading anything. I currently have two versions of Linux From Scratch, Slackware 9.1, College Linux, Fedora Core 1, Mandrake 9.2 and Mandrake 10 on my /boot/grub/menu.lst. Unlike lilo, you don't need to run grub if you edit the list, it reads the list every time you reboot. If you recompile the kernel you don't need to run grub, if you mess things up you can get a command prompt at the grub screen and try different options. The only time I've need to use that was when I deleted a partition. That meant that the other partitions got renamed so when grub looked for /boot/grub/menu.lst on /dev/hda12, it was now called /hda11 so it didn't know what to do and dumped me at the command prompt. I fixed the situation with the first Mandrake 9.1 CD which is a bootable cd and has grub and fdisk on it. How brilliant was Mandrake 9.1? I feel so lucky to have started out with that. I think that when the 2.6 kernel gets to being version 20 plus Mandrake will have settled down and regained it's former glory but at the moment it's all a bit up in the air. Mandrake 10 is not bad, it seems to have a problem with my printer (it keeps trying to reconfigure it every time I reboot) and it's crashed/segfaulted a few times (I don't like finding core dumps in the home folder) but it's better than than 9.2. If you try some other distros give http://www.maxtux.co.uk/ a look. First class post is fast and cheap. I've tried 5 or 6 different distros from them and all the CD's have been perfect. No problems at all.
With the Speedtouch I've often had problems with it but I've always been able to plug away at it and get it working in the end. Try different Firmware. On my computer windows has the firmware in /mnt/windows/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/alcaudsl.sys . Try copying it to /usr/speedtouch and renaming it mgmt.o . That one works well enough on Windows but in Linux I find the mgmt.o file in this tarball works better http://download.ethomson.com/download/speedmgmt.tar.gz . Your adsl file above looks perfect but if the lights stay green with no flashing then the firmware isn't getting loaded. modem_run must load the firmware before you can pppd call adsl . You must be sick of me by now. Look at that, I've been typing so long my tea's gone cold.

Re: MDK 10 Official + speedtouch usb = 0 internet.

MDK10,
Did you load the package soeedtouch from the CDROM ?
You should have the microcode on a floppy ready.

When you now do the network config you have the speedtouch listet.
Choose pppoatm
Fill up the form with your data !!!!

The problem with MDK10 is here when you boot the system and it comes to opening
the ADSL connection at boot. a lot of errors come on the screen. Nevertheless
it works here.

Mahdrake is the only linux distro wher you can easily configure your
speedtouch router.

Re: Speedtouch 330 USB in MDK-10 - to Andrew Benton

We are perfectly aware of the correct configuration.

What I want to know
Have you also a lot of error messages at MDK10 boot when connecting ADSL
to the internet.
There is about half a page of errors about the usb router on the screen. !!
Nevertheless the connection is finally established ok.

Yes I get those error messages and like you, they're meaningless as the connection works fine. Mandrake 10 prints the messages when I connect but with other distros the messages get printed as the system is shutting down.

RanDomIze-PT - have you tried setting up the connection through the Mandrake Control Centre like I described earlier http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...273#post909273 this seems to get Mandrake to load some things which are needed to establish the connection. Reinstalling Mandrake made a difference for me as it cleared away the mistakes I'd made before. I would like to add that I'm not impressed with Mandrake 10. It seems very unstable. It scares me to reboot into it. It's the most unstable operating system I've ever used.

I'm using the speedtouch conf package as well, and i'm getting the same error as Mr Tickle:
Code:
Another device / program is already accessing the modem
FAILED because of modem_run error 237
I've tried using the Mandrake Control centre connection and it worked.
Only problem was that the computer constantly freezes for absolutely no reason while its connected to the internet, so thats a no go.

Any ideas?

Andrew,

Just thought I would say a big thank you for solving my speedtouch problem. I have SuSE 8.2 on my desktop and got speedtouch to work using Steve Parker's shell script for the speedtouch driver. I assumed I woiuld need the same for Mandrake 10 on my laptop but the script cannot yet cope with the 2.6 kernel. I tried your Control Centre suggestion and it has worked! At last I have web connection on my laptop. Thank you again. I should have checked the bleeding obvious!

About that microcode...

So, before I face any of that stuff, how do I actually get ahold of the microcode?

The message from Mandrake during installation said to get it from sourceforge. Sourceforge said to get it from the speedtouch site, but the address they gave doesn't seem to exist any more and I was taken to the home page.

So... I negotiated to the Linux download page and downloaded. This gave me a file called KQD6 R204.zip Double clicking this gave me two more files called KQD6P1.eni and KQD6P2.eni Clicking these opens the 'Start Applications' box and it asks me what I want to open it with.

So where do I find mngmt.o

http://download.ethomson.com/download/speedmgmt.tar.gz Just untar it and get the mgmt.o out of it. Or use the firmware from your Windows partition. On my computer it's called /mnt/windows/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/alcaudsl.sys . Copy it (and rename it) to /usr/speedtouch/mgmt.o . I find the Linux firmware works better but your millage may be different.

I can't get my speedtouch (silver one - one of the newer ones I think) working in Mandrake 10 Official (tried a few times) - however, it works fine in Mandrake 10 Community (just configure at install time). I even tried to 'upgrade' my copy of Community today with the Official disks and found my modem could no longer connect to the internet. From my experience of 9.2 and 10CE you *should* be able to connect to the internet with ease - perhaps something has been changed in the official Mandrake 10 accidently or whatever?

Cool

Well I'm all logged in now! I was on the verge of complaining that it wouldn't let me copy the stupid microcode over and I realized that being logged in as 'root' might make all the difference, and it did. Thanks for the address!

As for M10 Official. I now have two sets of discs, and neither of them will even load. They get as far as the first graphic screen (Where you're asked if you want to press F1 or Enter), then either go blank and freeze, or display the option menu starting halfway across the screen, and ending back on the LH side, after which the progress bar starts up from where it should be, gets about halfway, then that freezes as well.

Very odd...
