Mandriva Spring 2008.1. No inetd.conf. How do you configure without it?

I have upgraded my system to mandriva spring 2008.1. I am trying to configure the system to allow telnet, SSH and FTP services. I don't see a /etc/inetd.conf. I did a find on "*net*.conf" from root and it turned up nothing.

How do I allow telnet and other inetd services?

Thanks

Hi, inetd (i think) has been replaced by iptables and xinetd.

The interface for the iptables fire wall is shorewall, but I personally have found it to be difficult to determine it's usage.

There is a web site that allows configuring of ports for the firewall script (cut and paste)...

http://easyfwgen.morizot.net/gen/

But generally I configure the /etc/rc.d/init.d/iptables

directly, I found this web page useful...

http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/w..._Using_iptable

start scripts for the different run levels are found in /etc/rc.d/init.d

and, now after a quick look, i think /etc/services may be the file you want if you need to modify the ports.

Or perhaps you have the daemons installed and they are not starting, then see if they are in the list...

"configure your computer", "System" and select "Manage system services..." from the system tools menu.

See how you go.

regards, Glenn

That wasn't it.

Thanks for your response Glennspref.

There is no xinetd.conf either. I looked for it in /etc/xinetd.d and my find command should have picked it up if they moved it.

The GUI configuration tools don't seem to have a mechanism to allow you to instruct inetd to listen for services like telnet and FTP.

Thanks

Many services do not require xinetd (I am positive about ssh and ftp), so I its not always installed by default.

So you are not talking about the firewall config, i take it.

Then you need to modify your question with more details. Please?

Glenn
