Mandriva 2008 3-D effect...?

Has anyone paid much attention to the 3-D effect with Mandriva one 2008?

What do you have to do to install it?

Do you download beryl or emerald?

Must you configure it?

As long as your graphics card is correctly configured, it's just a case of opening the Mandriva Control Centre--> Hardware then click on the Configure 3D Desktop effects then make your choice between Metisse or Compiz-Fusion. Any additional packages will be installed automatically, then follow the onscreen prompt to logout then log back in again.

I've had a play with it, works just as Nexus said and there's a CompizConfig package installed that makes it easy to set-up the effects. On my laptop, it surprisingly doesn't seem to slow the machine down at all.

My overriding feeling on all this is that yeah, it looks amazing, very clever etc, but what's the ******* point?!

I want apps to open as fast as possible, not wait while they're artificially slowed down by flames or the effect of an envelope opening etc. I love the cube effect for example, but why would I use it? Why not just click on a desktop selector and have it appear? Maybe I'm missing the point.

Yeah I tried it and messed around with it a bit, but then switched it back.

What's the point of eye-candy in general but to make the onlooker go WOW!

An enjoyable experience is machine spec dependant. All I can say is at least you don't have to have the mandatory 1Gb of ram to use CompizFusion (unlike that other, ahem bloatware system).

CompizFusion, does exactly what it says on the box, it applies visual effects to otherwise static actions.

Almost everyone I know started out with the same opinion of Compiz, now after using it for a while they all say they can't go back to using a boring normal desktop.

I have to say going to 3D didn't seem to affect the speed of operation of my PC at all which is very impressive.
