i gave mandrake 10 a whirl, but i'm use to with rh9 allwing me to login with root or any user from the front screen....mandrake 10 doesn't have that, is there some way to set that up? i end up deleting the users so it forces it to allow for me to type in root as the user....
What you are saying is it automatically logs you in as a user right? You can do this in the "Configure your computer" section of Mandrake. Go into the manage users portion and you can make your changes there. Hope this points you in the right direction.
it stops at a login screen and only has one option to log in as the regular user, no option to log in as anyone else...
like rh9 stops at the log in screen and allow you to type in whoever you want to log in as, mandrake isn't setup like that, it just has users listed and you click on who you want to log in (like xp) but doesn't show root as a choice...
so i'm just trying to figure out how to either make it so i can type in who i want to log in as, or show root as a choice....
what do you need to logon as root for??? btw.. your answer is somewhere in the graphic section in the configure your computer menu. (cant remember exactly where)

can you not su from the terminal?? also i think their is a thread posted somewhere that explains how to allow non-root users to mount dev's and shares... might want to look in to that... But there shouldn't be any reason to logon to a machine as root
Just to clarify one point. Mandrake's log in screen can be used to log in as root. Just type root as the username and it's password. It's been hidden because logging into kde as root is not recommended. As other people stated, it's best to log in as a regular user and then use a console to do your root stuff.
If you mount at the console you will have to either do it everytime you boot or edit your initialization files. I know about the etc/rc.local, but there are more of those so let's hope someone else posts about them
i was able to get to the login screen to show both the user and hte root.
first in KDE go to "start" -> then to system -> configuration -> KDE -> System -> Login Manager
once you ar ein click on the "users" tab inthe middle u will see under the hidden user section, the user, nobody, and Root. jsut uncheck the root box. log out and u will see the root longin there.

i am still a newbie, but this is what i found to work best.
Best to never log into your system as root if you can help it. In mcc [The Mandrake Control Center] click on mount points. Click Samba Mount Points. Now you can configure your samba mount points, and save these settings, so you will not have to mount them at each start. I do not use samba, so I do not know how to enter the configuration, but that is where to get it done.

i used mdk 9 and never had prob logging in as rot. it the graphical login menu, in the username type root and in the password give the password and u log in as root. u need not click on an user icon.
