Mandrake 10.1 and login problem

I installed Mandrake 10.1 official version (3 CDs), during installation, I entered password of root ,admin123 (fake one), then when I finished installation successfully , I tried to login as root, I entered the password (admin123), it did not accept it, I thought that I had entered different password.

I tried to install again from scratch, I setup password for root as admin123, when I finished installtion successfully, I tried to login as root with password admin123456,,I could not !!!???

Another thing I want to mention:

The system did not ask me about username, to type in!!!, It only asked me about password?

The description of screen looks like this:

{{Password:

Session type:
KDE, GNOME, IceWM,Default, Failsafe

Reboot Halt Login}}.

There is no option to enter username, I guess this is the problem

Hmmm
a couple of possibilities come to mind

Did you set up other user accounts when you installed Mandrake ? obvious I know but had to ask.

Did you tell the installer to automatically boot to a certain user ?

When you installed a second time were you able to login as root ?

1- No I have not set up any other user (This is what I used to do with FC3)

2- No, I have not told the installer.

3- Second time, still I was not able to login as root.

It seems your installation is automatically wanting to login root, perhaps if you try reinstalling - create one other user other than root.

Make sure that you do not check the box to automatically login a certain user .....

About your password not being accepted hmmm
ummm when you boot "capslock" isnt coming on or something, or check numlock is on or off, passwords are case-sensitive ...

thats about all I can think of
hope this helps

I reinstalled Manadrake again, and I created two users during installation.

When The installation completed,I was able to see (Fisr time of reboot after installation completed) three boxes: (Without creating users,I was not able to see these boxes in my previous installation)

One for username, and second one for password, and third one for machine name that had been taken from DHCP server, because PC was connected to internet LAN.

I tried to use username, and password for root,( I left machine name as it is, it has been assigned name from DHCP Server), I could not login to my PC.

I restarted the PC, then when it booted,I could not find the previous three boxes that I mentioned above, I was able to see only the users that I created during installation.

I can login to the system by using any of these two users. Just click on the name (I can not type in the username because it is displayed on the screen), another screen pop up then I can type in password for him

Now why cannot I see the username box for the root ? Why was I able to see the name only the first boot after installation ?

Suspiciously sounds like because you only had one user, Mandrake was automatically logging in root, now with other users it is now giving the choice. However Mandrake by default wont put root on the login screen but that can be changed.

To access root from the login page >>>>>
click on the "star"
go system
go configuration
go KDE
go system
go Login Manager
enter root password
click on Users Tab
uncheck root as a hidden user
you can also change the little picture
for your login
click-on apply & OK

hope this helps
