Kde 3.2.3 - Help!

Ok, so I was running the KDE 3.2.0 that came with my Mandrake 10.0, but once and awhile it would crash (well, not in the sense we are all used to in Windoze). It would pop up a box saying KDE crashed, but it only closes the program that caused the offense and all you have to do is reopen it. Anyhow, after it happened a few times I thought I would install the new KDE 3.2.3 figuring it might fix the problem. So, I went to the Mandrake Cooker and got the KDE 3.2.3 RPMs. For this version Mandrake chose to use Xorg's X Server instead of XFree86 so I had to install that as well. I installed them and rebooted, X Server starts fine, KDE acts as if it is loading but it does not display the background, the kicker, or anything except for my Gaim login pops up.

I need help if anyone can help me.

unfortunately, i have to inform you, you should never use cooker on a production machine unless you are prepared to fix things eventually. cooker apps are works in progress & go through many changes & updates, sometimes multiple ones in the same day. and since you not only installed a cooker version of KDE but you also installed Xorg, my opinion is you're doubly screwed (pardon my language). if it was just KDE, i would suggest booting into another DE, uninstalling all things KDE, then reinstalling it off the MDK CD's. but the Xorg conflicting with XFree makes it go deeper than this. unless somebody else comes along with a better option, i'd say try the upgrade method............ boot off the MDK install CD, choose "upgrade", & let it do it's thing. that "should" correct things, but i'm not 100% possitive due to the Xorg stuff. if that fails, then i'd say you should just do a fresh install & in the future don't use cooker on your main setup. if you want to try cooker things, do a second install of MDK for testing purposes & prepare to have it break once in a while. that way you'll always have a good install to go back to.

Well it is not a production machine, it is dual booted with Windows XP Pro.

Ok, well I had only installed the base RPMs and realized that I needed the kdelibs and kdecore4 RPMs, and that I probably had version mismatches, so I installed the updated kdelibs and kdecores and now KDE does not work at all. Here is the logs:

As the previous poster had suggested, it is not a wise choice to use cooker unless, you are ready and able to fix whatever breaks from current development packages.

Thus, that being said, if you are still able to get into cli, check to see where /etc/X11/xorg.conf is symlinked to. It should be pointed at /etc/X11/XF86Config (I had somewhat the same error as you and couldn't get into KDE when I updated to X.org. Found out that xorg.conf was still symlinked to XF86Config-4 and changing it so that it was symlinked to XF86Config fixed it).

Code:
$ cd /etc/X11
# rm xorg.conf
# ln -s XF86Config xorg.conf

Actually I figured out on Thursday that the same RPMs are on the KDE website, so that is where I downloaded the kdelibs and kdecores from.

I did check the symbolic link and you were right about it being linked to the wrong file so I changed it. At first it gave me a parsing config file error about it not having a driver line for device1 so I put that in, now it displays the root users' red screen and give a message about failing to run kdeinit. The log said, Failed to set up write-combining range (0xd8000000,0x4000000).

Actually I read that the kdeinit error was a bug in KDE 3.2.2 having to do with arts and kdemultimedia, so I thought it might still be a problem with 3.2.3 if they had not fixed it. So I updated my arts from 1.2 to 1.2.3 and my kdemultimedia from 3.2.0 to 3.2.3. Now my kdm.log says that it failing to load the GLX:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX
/usr/bin/kdm_greet: relocation error: /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN9QComboBox4hideEv

and the Xorg.0.log says the same thing. So, I am thinking at this point it is a Xorg problem. Yet, can anyone tell me how to fix the undefined symbol?

Ok, so I found on other forums that a lot of other people were having the same problem because they did not update the qt3s, and that fixed there problems, so I updated my qt3 from 3.2 to 3.3 and sure enough, it fixed the problem. I have KDE up and running, not everything is working correctly but I think that is due to having different versions of things. I need to update the graphics, network, and game packages to be of the same version.
