Installation: INITTAB not found

In search of Linus I installed 10.0 AMD64. When I start Linux though, it stops with
No Inittab file found
Enter runlevel:

No matter what I type (1-6, S) I cannot get the system running.

Help appreciated

your root filesystem should cotain a file /etc/inittab, looking something like this:

si::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS
...

especially, /etc should _not_ be on a partition of its own
