how to split installation DVD to CDs

Hi

Env:
production machine with mandriva 2006
and dvd reader
test machine with mandriva 2006 and cd reader
i find into a linux magazine the dvd with the mandriva 2007 spring edition DVD
and i want to install it on my test machine, but to do this i have to split the dvd contents to CDs....
looking at the mandriva 2006 rpms i see mkcd package, but i do not know if it is the right package and if yes how to exactly proceed..
i need to avoid weeks of work.

so if someone already solved this question, then the help will be very very appreciated.

thanks in advance

Maurizio

This is non trivial... you could just extract the files then split them to multiple CD-size ISO's, but the installer is going to expect to find all the files on the one disk!

If you are lucky, the installer will have a configuration file tolling it which disk package B is on (like redhats old hdlist and hdlist2 files). But it has been a while since I looked at this... the usual method in this day and age is to find someone with an IDE DVD drive and "borrow" it while they are not looking. (Or you could ask - ahem.)

If there were an easy way to do this Mandriva would have released CD ISO's before now. As it is they are still supposed to be available "soon". If you're not willing to wait, you could download one of the ONE live CD's and use that to install.

You do not report the ability to burn a disk, so the simplest thing may be to install the DVD reader in the test machine while installing the new version of Mandriva. If you have never done anything like this before I suggest you get someone who knows what they are doing to help you.

If your test machine has a broadband Internet connection, you could set up the Internet Software Media Sources for Mandriva 2007 (Spring) by following the direction at Easy URPMI. Once you have removed the sources for Mandriva 2006 and added the ones for 2007 (Spring) run the following commands to update your test machine:
Code:
urpmi.update -a
urpmi --auto-select --auto
The first command updates your package database, and the second one selects and installs the new packages (may take some time).

Using urpmi to update to Mandriva 2007 (Spring) may introduce unexpected results (I do not know if there will be configuration conflicts or other issues).

Good luck

HTH,
