How to log in as Root

Guess it's not my day. Tried to log in as root but when LM9.2b2 loads my "personal" account is the only account available. Shouldn't Root also be available? Is this a bug/feature? Or have I not set it up correctly?
Thanks

How are you logging in? If you use KDM or MdkKDM, you need to turn on the option to log in as root through MCC

switch your login manager to GDM. It's much easier to log in as root using that.

As a question: Why do you want to log in as root in KDM? It's much easier (and safer) to log in as your regular user, open a console window, and type su <enter> then enter your root password to issue commands as root.

Logging in as root

I "need" ,from what I've read, to log in as root to run the LM update feature. I've tried urpmi and it allways fails even when doing SU.

The normal way of doing this would be to go into configuration --> Mandrake control center --> software updates --> updates.

When you try to launch mandrake control center it will prompt you for your root password, and that's where you provide your root permissions. Logging in as root is a BAD idea for the most part.

By default the root user is not an option on the login screen. (I don't think). If its really important to you to have root, you can add it (I think in mandrake control center --> boot --> boot options), but I _really_ wouldn't encourage that

I would agree with what bigvoice said. Use the update feature from within MCC or from the menu Configuration -> Packaging -> Mandrake Update

It is much safer than logging in as root.

Its not advisable or typically neccesary to log in as root - however, one way of doing it is:

K
Configuration
KDE Control Centre
System
Login Manager
Aministrator mode butoon - type root password
Users tab
Uncheck the cross next to Root user, in "hidden users"
appy

Log out
Log in

youll see an icon for root.

Again, using su, is sufficient to gain temporary root privilages.

You can configure the service to let you log in as root, I forget where its at off the top of my head though, shoudl be under the menu, Configure KDE/Gnome {depending which one you use, if the menu look slike a gear its KDE, like a foot its gnome} and poke around a bit.

The other options is to NOT have your system boot Xwindows on start up which you can set in Mandrake control center under Boot config, in this case you will log in at the text console, and then start Xwindows by typeing startx

In this case you will enter X as whatever you logged in as. be it root, or your normal account.

how do you change your login manager (KDM/GDM). A friend changed mine to GDM but i would like to know how to change to KDM if needs be.
I'm running mdk9.0 so i don't think there are any config tools that i know of. i got 9.1 on another system so if i find out how to change the login manager on that, it will be good as well

Thx

I triple agree that you shouldn't log in as root. Who knows when your box is being hacked?
