Angry How to get back to Desktop

Installed Mandrake Security Multinetwork Firewall this morning, after installation it rebooted, and the LiLO GUI screen looks different. So i boot up Linux, and now it takes me to command line instead of my desktop

Now I know if I go to /etc/inittab I should have

id:5:initdefault right?

But I've never tried to edit text files without Kwrite, so how do I open up a text file from command line?

Or is there an easier way to fix this issue? Should I reboot with CD-1 and adjust LiLO from there?

Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I wish it were that simple, u see, it says
startx
Bash: command not found or something of the sort.

Im using Mandrake 9.2(RC2) btw if it matters.

Well Ive figured out how to edit /etc/inittab.

I just login root, and type
vi /etc/inittab

So i go to change id:3:initdefault to id:5:initdefault so I can loadup GUI runlevel, right?

But how the hell do I save the file and get out of it??????

I tried just CTRL+ALT+F2 to get back to login and shutdown properly, but when I reboot, it says that innittab made a copy called innitab.swp <--swap file? and some error message about whether I want to delete it or edit it again...

Please help, At least I'm doing some exploring of my own and not just asking blind questions, eh?

The complete path to startx is :
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx
You might want to try that.

Well Ive figured out how to edit /etc/inittab.

Cool

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE BACKUP YOUR INITTAB FILE. It can be really inconvienent to lose.

If you want to try to edit the file with vi, after you open it hit "i" and youll see "--INSERT--" in the bottom left corner.
Carefully arrow down to the 3 and backspace over it and replace it with a 5.
hit escape until the ""--INSERT--" goes away.
type ":wq" (youll see it as you type it at the bottom right) and hit enter
If you cant exit the file type ":wq!"
and hit enter. Take a look at the file with more "more /etc/inittab" to make sure it isnt screwed up. Then delete the swap file made by vi (.inittab.swp)
Then if you have an inittab~ delete that too. vi always makes a backup file with the tilde on it unless you tell it not to.

If you start vi by itself you can type :help to get a good over view of commands.

Vi is the best of all text editors. Beware of those who offer emacs.

Oh my... how sad is this...

I finally edited the inittab to where even on Bootup it says

Runlevel 5...

and i STILL get the command line.....

There must be something really bad going on here.....

I am getting one error on shut down and it is the only one that fails when it is sent the kill signal, and that is the Display Manager
...

Any ideas people???

not found, the only file in my /usr/X11R6/bin directory is enable_X11_numlock*

i try to execute it but just get an Error taht it can't display, oh my, i dont even have startx ....

Maybe i should just uninstall this firewall and hope Mandrake comes back normal?????

If this is what I have to do, how would I go about doing it???

Thanks in advance
