how to boot at run level 3 from the get-go

I sat up a machine with mdk 10.1 in a higher security mode and have left it alone so long the password for my users expired.

how do I boot into terminal mode from the get-go so I can su to root and update the passwords?
I thought I had read there's a key I could hold to get there, search=no luck.

thanks alot!

Still have a root password right ?

Boot your machine normally. Once on the gui asking for a login, press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a text virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F2 through Ctrl-Alt-F6 should all hold a virtual console as well...), login as root, change the user password with 'passwd username' and log out. press Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go back to the gui (if you ever get a blank screen, try Ctrl-Alt-F8 through Ctrl-Alt-F10 until you find it) and log in with your newly created password.
