COOL. Let's say you've also got a network going with a static IP address of 192.168.0.2. Can I do the same thing on that different IP address so other computers see me as "BillyBob" or whatever?
Yup, sure can. You can also use the cmd-line utility "hostname", rather than mod files directly. E.g., "hostname" tells you your hostname, "hostname BillyBob" sets your hostname to BillyBob. Don't forget to log out and back in to see the effect in a shell.
Just an update: I WAS WRONG! 'hostname' (at least on RH 9.0) does NOT update everything. It only updates /etc/hosts, not /etc/sysconfig/network, so it will NOT WORK (it seems). I have to still manually modify /etc/sysconfig/network, even when using 'hostname', so anyone reading: take Mathieu's advice, not mine and save some time.
