Help! Mandrake 9.2 PATH confusion

My PATH variable is not consistent from one time to the next. Specifically when I let it autologin to my primary user id I have /usr/local/bin in my path but if I logout and back in its not there, also it disappears if I am l logged in as a different user and su to the primary.
I know I can set this in my .bash_profile, but where is it set globally? There's no "PATH=" in my /etc/profile, just a couple if's appending to PATH. I've been searching and rtf'ing, and can't find where path is set for all users on the system. Should I just stick it into /etc/profile? Or is there someplace I'm not looking?

thanks,
Joel

Well, I've made some progress but still have some questions.
The "From Power up to Bash Prompt" HOWTO has been very helpful.
PATH seems to be set up in a piecemeal fashion I've found where parts of it are set in rc.sysinit and init.d/functions, but I still haven't figured out where /usr/local/bin gets appended. The su thing is simple, when I su I get the path of the user who originally logged into the window I'm using.

I also haven't figured out why logging out and back in loses my /usr/local/bin. I went ahead and shoved a full PATH= declaration in /etc/profile and that seems to have fixed this for me.

Now I'm just left with curiosity where the heck it came from. I did a grep content search of the entire /etc and couldn't find where /usr/local/bin was being put in PATH. If anybody knows this offhand, I'd sure like to hear about it.
