Ok, I know I am not the only one. What I want to know is how many people are having various problems with Mandrake 10. Please only post if you have been using Mandrake for at least a couple versions. If you have just switched over to Mandrake and Mandrake 10 is the first version that you have used, please do not list all of the problems you are having.
I have been using Mandrake since version 6 or 7 something and 10 seems to have some unusual problems that I cannot tell if they are problems with Mandrake, KDE, or what.
I am using MDK 10, 2.4.25 kernel. Problems are:
Sound server crashes at seemingly random points.
Direct Rendering for normal users randomly is off on boot up.
Sound server randomly fails to start at bootup.
Unable to successfully compile any kernels (all seem to fail on usb.o)
Cannot get any wine version to work. MDK rpms will install, but wineserver locks up, cannot even run "top" or "ksysguard" to see what is happening.
I have had other problems too, but I cannot recall them at the moment.
I have also been using mdk since around version 7 and have always dual booted (cause of games) and have labelled myself and advanced amatuer i aint to clever and haven't really done much other than mess about in it i haven't been very productive i've had xinerama running with two graphics cards and ran freesco many moons ago but the only real hassle has been getting Nvidia drivers working i have cracked that at v 8.1 now i have jumped to ten none of my old installs work on my new pc so i was looking for a new version which led me too v 10 community edition (don't know if thats a beta but it was a free version)
i jus cant get past the first probing screen keep getting lost interrupt
Well, here are some problems I've encountered.
1) I can't get the firewall turned down. It is dropping all outgoing packets that are not directed at the login server. This includes dns. Basically no useful internet connectivity. Hopefully iptables flush will work, but really a problem if I cannot get it working using Drake tools.
2) My microphone input does not work. In Audacity as well as the little record sounds app. Alsa looks like it found both of my soundcards alright and has this channel full-on.
3) Nvidia driver didn't work automatically. This is why I bought powerpack. Have to run nvidia script.
4) Didn't recognize my winmodem. Oh well, I have a hardware one.
5) I suspect it is harddrive related, but I installed it on a friends old box and it was soo slow. Knoppix was much more responsive. Install took over an hour. I am still looking into it, but it was pretty embarrassing.
Overall I really like it, and this is CE, but I just wish there were no frustrations involved.
Ok, just a heads up... apparently the Community version was not an official release. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mandrakesoft for NOT stating this. Hopefully the Official release will perform as well as Mandrake has in the past.
