gimp print causing slow Mandrake startup?
Dear all,
I have been using the Special Mandriva 2005 Distribution for a few months and all was peachy until I installed gimp print. Now the pc it takes an age to boot. Ok so the hardware I'm using is not state of the art, PII at 266mhz, but still. It now takes around 5 minutes to load up. Once loaded however everything is fine. Before I installed gimp print it took around a minute to start.
Watching the detailed startup seems to suggest that something is hammering the processor, each step takes an age to complete and the hard drive light only flickers every now and again. As I said above all is ok once it's started, so its only a problem on boot (?)
Has anyone else had this problem?
Does anyone know how I can trouble shoot this?
I can think of two things that might help you pin down the problem: (1) examine the contents of /var/log/messages to see what kind of error messages are occurring; (2) when the bootup process gives you the option of "interactive startup," press "i" so that you can say yes or no to each process that's proposed for starting during that section of booting. I don't use Gimp print, but if there's a daemon that starts up during that time, you can say "no" to it and see what happens after that. If bootup time is back to normal, you'll know that's what's hampering things, and then see about finding a way to fix it.

Hmmm...
Many thanks for the reply.
As far as I can tell there are no errors. Oddly the problem seems to occure very early in startup, before it enters Interactive. Could there be something stuffing up the Kernal? i have an nasty fealing this is going to be a re-install if so.
Why don't you uninstall Gimp Print and see if you notice a big difference. If so, that's the culprit, though how it could be causing trouble that early in the process I don't know. If there's no difference, then at least you'll know it was just a coincidence that the trouble started about when you installed Gimp Print, and you can rule that out. That's about all I can think of that I would try at this point.
