Error when KDE starts loading in 10.1 install

I have just installed 10.1 (official) from the public download. This was to be an upgrade from 9.2 but this did not work and hung on a kernel error(!).

I thought all was Ok but in trying to get other things working (SAMBA, LinNeighborhood, Realplayer) I now seem to have developed an error for a reason I cannot understand. If KDE is set to install automatically I get the following error windows as it loads:

"There was an error setting up the inter-process commumnications in KDE - the message returned was -

Could not read network connection list //DCOPserver_MEL__0 please check that dcopserver is running".

Then another message:

"The following installation problem was detected whilst KDE was trying to start - No write access to $HOME directory (/)

and the final message:

"Will not save configuration.
Configuration file "//kde/share/config/ksplashrc" not writable
configuration file "//kde/share/config/kdeglobals" not writable

It then exits KDE and presents the login screen - then KDE starts normally!

ALSO If I start to the command line, login and then execute KDE the error does not appear. KDE opens without error.

Any ideas to get rid of this error message please. Thanks.

(NB I can get internet connection working but not windows shares - related?)

Mel P (novice)"

the dcop problem puzzled me a lot too!! in the end i just made a new .kde directory and copied all of the old fiels and directories from my old .kde to it (except the dcop and other important ones of course!!). but dont do this unless you are confident!!

i think the best first step is executing the command

chown -R YOUR_USER /home/YOUR_USER

which will set all the directories and files in your home directory to be yours (but replace YOUR_USER with erm... your user!)

next, it worries me that it says your $HOME variable is /. It should be set to the user's home directory (so, YOUR_USER's $HOME variable should be /home/YOUR_USER). If you type

echo $HOME

do you just get a / ? if so this is probably the problem, and you will need to find a way to set it permenantly back to /home/YOUR_USER. You can do it temporarily with the 'export HOME=/home/YOUR_USER' command from your prompt but i dont think it will stay set like this for next boot up
