Unhappy Changing video resolution

Hi, everyone. I have a problem with my Mandrake 10 installation. It's a dual boot system with Win XP, and it worked great till my monitor died. I got a replacement monitor, a nice flatscreen, but now when I boot linux I just get an "out of bounds" message on the monitor screen. I'm pretty sure what's going on is that KDE/X is set to a higher screen resolution than my new monitor is capable of handling.
Does anyone know how to address this? I'm sure there's a settings file somewhere that tells KDE/X what screen resolution to use at boot time, but I don't know what file that is. Also, isn't there a way to switch to text mode so I can log in and edit the text files? Is it CTRL-ALT-F1? I can't remember.
I'm sure that to some of you this is a trivially easy problem, but for me it's a show-stopper. Any help would be most welcome.
Thanks,
Harry

It's exactly ctrl+alt+f1. Changing video modes can be done via editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf or by ctrl+plus/minus on the fly.
