Can't install any 10.1 updates

I am trying to update my 10.1 version of mandrake. No matter what updates I try to run they all fail. It appears like I am missing something major. Since RPMDrake won't let me copy that window I can't show the lines (there's too many anyway), but they all say one package conflicts with another. Can someone help me sort this out? TIA.

I'm manually typing in the beginning of the message hoping someone will spot the problem:

initscripts <8.38 conflicts with prcsys-0.0.2-1mdv2007.0 libxorg-x11 <7.0 conflicts with libxp6-1.0.0-3dvm2007.0 rpm < yada, yada, yada, ad nauseum.

That version of xorg gives me the idea that your going to upgrade to 2007.0

You might be better off upgrading your install from cd rather than the web.

10.1 is so old now, you've had 10.2, 2005le, 2006 and now 2007.0 and very soon 2007.1

If you're happy with 10.1 and don't want to upgrade the whole lot, try using the urpmi skip-list. (/etc/urpmi/skip-list) any file name put here will be skipped.

Like glibc, kernel, kernel-source, xorg, and kde. That will save a lot of the dependent conflicts you're seeing.

Another way is to do it from cli. (init 3.) Make sure you have been to and done easy-urpmi(web site) first.

urpmi will take care of the dependencies for you, reinstalling anything that is removed as it goes about updating the system. (keep the skip-list in mind)

Good luck. p.s. If you wait till 2007.1 is released and get it on cdrom or dvd, you can upgrade from there. (with a full distro package list.)

also, when booting from cd, an install requires the formatting of /root and (/var or /usr) but an upgrade will leave all of your root files(personal) inplace.

You could also try an incremental update, update from 10.1 to 2005, then 2005 to 2006 etc.

This is a major job, and you're not the first.

The system has gone through many changes, some packages from 10.1 are now obsolete, being replaced with others.

Mostly system level, there's a possibility that doing "urpmi --auto-select --auto" will render your system useless.

Also somany packages rely on files being used while you have the GUI running, so try it with a cli. init 3.

This is not normal for Mandrake to produce such errors, I can see this in Fedora but not Mandrake. Something tells me that you did not enable the right repositories. If you have Mandrake 10.1 and enabled only Mandrake 10.1 repositories, there should not be any errors as the packages in the proper repos. are compatible with packages installed in the distribution. If you enabled Mandrake 10.2 or Mandrake 10 or which ever other than 10.1, you'll get these errors. Check the file /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg to see which distribution is in the updates mirror address.

This is not a Debian distribution where you can mix version repositories.

You have to issue command as root to remove the wrong repository before you can add the right one:

urpmi.removemedia update

Or if you have all Mandriva 2007 repositories, remove all of them with this command:

urpmi.removemedia -a

This will also remove your CD's if they are in the list, if you don't want to remove the CD's (I suggest you don't), then remove them one at a time specifying which ones you want to remove.

Thanks for all the replies. I knew I was behind but I didn't realize I was that far behind. However, I would have expected the updater to know what to do. Anyway I guess I'll get the newer version.

I have Mandrake 10.1 installed on my old computer, it's pretty decent. I have Mandrake 10.2 on my newer computer, I consider it to be "Diamond" solid. Last week I download Mandriva 2007 for my laptop, during the installation it felt like I was installing Mandrake 10.2 as it was pretty much the same. Other than newer versions of allot of packages, so far I haven't found any major differences. Mandrake 10.1 & 10.2 are rather exceptional distributions. But most of us humans feel we got to keep up with the Joneses, I don't think I will be rushing to un-install 10.2 off my desktop, I will also install 2007 on my desktop though.

But yeah, the software updater only updates, not upgrade, and with Mandriva the updates only go so far. There were a huge amount of updates early in January of this year for Mandriva 10.2 (2005 LE), I have a feeling that's the last round for that distribution, but those are mostly bug fixes, not upgrades.

Hi, Nice tip, Junior "This is not a Debian distribution where you can mix version repositories".

Might save me some pain in future.
