Basics of installing software for a NooB

Where can I find some information about the basics of installing software on my Mandrake 10 system? For example, I want to install Zsnes, but do not know how. Any resources I can read or anything?

Thanks!

Im certain you'll find tons of info on the web and around this site if you look a bit.. Also try mandrake's site. Do a search for Penguin Liberation Front and look for easy urpmi. Try looking at the included mandrake documentation. There are tons of different ways to install software.. sometimes a simple rpm -Uvh or is all it takes from a command line. Thats probably the quickest and easiest way to install zsnes. You can get the rpm from contrib. Then open a terminal, "su" to root, and "rpm -Uvh zsnes*" BTW, you'll need to be in the directory where you've downloaded zsnes or supply that with the rpm command.

Try searching google groups as well. There used to be a pretty active mandrake usenet groupl.

good luck

easyurpmi

Mandrake's documentation page.

If you go to easyurpmi and create a download list including plf and contrib sources, you'll be able to have a download version of the Mandrake docs resident on your computer, so you can read anytime you want

once you have gone to easyurpmi and configured your package sources installing a package is as easy as opening a console, then:

su root
urpmi "package name"
if the package is available from one of the sources you configured at easyurpmi then it and all its dependencies will be installed in one easy step. if the package isn't available you can google for it or look here http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ . then try installing it using the instructions provided in the post mentioned above.

of course you should also read all relevant man pages; tar, rpm, etc.
