In the startup on boot does it say MYSQL OK?

If not what does it say when you run in a terminal
mysql_safe &
to start mysql?

if this dosn't work tell us if the mysql is seen by the system
in a terminal type whereis mysql

you're not starting it correctly "mysql" is just the client program to connect to the server...

Try from the command line (assuming you've installed via mdk's rpms)
/etc/init.d/mysql start

To have it start on boot:
chkconfig mysql 3 5 on

Try connections via 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost to use network connections rather than local socket files.

As root try service mysql status.
Nb, it might be services, I cant check atm.

Then try service mysql restart.

You seem to have the mysql client program install so you can connect to other people's databases, but not the mysqld server so you can actually run MySQL.

Edit: Try using the Mandrake rpms instead of the mysql ones.

Use the Mandrake Control Centre to install mysqld, php, and anything else you want. Add more sources to your urpmi/RpmDrake via the Easy Urpmi site.

How have you installed apache and php so far? Compiled from source?
