a reccomendation for those complaining about 9.1 being slow

Im running 9.1 on a p4 1700 512 geoforce 3 ti200

It ran slow as molasses after the install this is what I did.

1)downloaded the NVIDIA driver.
2)downloaded all updates
3)opened a terminal urpmi kernel---it gave me a selection I picked 2.4.025 number 4 on the list it will show.
4)urpmi kernel-source it fetched and installed the source for the above kernel
5)cd /etc vi inittab ---look for run level 5 push i on your keyboard and clear 5 out adding 3 now you will boot into the console. After that hit esc on your key board type :wq then enter results saved to file.

6)Reboot start new kernel ,login ,su to root then locate your nivida driver type in sh NVIDIA-(whatever version you have here) then hit accept ,cant find interface want us to look on the ftp ,NO ,we will build it now.okay your all set now. (CD TO /etc/X11 ---> vi XF86Config-4 hit i on your keyboard again, look for load dri and possibly glcore.erase them.put load glx where it says load dbe.then locate the word device below and change the nv to nvidia.now hit esc on your keyboard and type :wq

NOW HERE IS THE FUN PART! Kernel recompile.I highly suggest you recompile the kernel on any mandrake distro as they are fat as HELL! No wonder things get slow.Their was stuff in my kernel I had no use for.

So here is how I did it and it works as long as you do it to the letter the way I show otherwise you could screw your kernel up.(Warning I highly suggest you read every Help file to the modules in the kernel YES EVERYONE if you do not know what you are doing)

su to root
cd /usr/src/linux
cp .config ~/
make mrproper
cp ~/.config .
make menuconfig

Now go through the whole menu taking the FAT out of your kernel and adding things you might need.

After you are finished save the config file

now type Make dep
after it is finished
make clean
after it is done
make modules (go eat somthing or watch tv at this point depending on your system this one will take awhile)

when done type

make modules_install
when done type update modules

now cd back to /etc --------vi inittab find the 3 and hit i on your keyboard erase 3 add the 5 now hit esc on your keyboard type :wq <enter>

REBOOT and depending on your choices in the kernel pray
If all is well congratulations you have shaved some fat off your kernel.

(please note to during the install I also formatted the HD for reiserFS support) put all that together =a speed demon.

After I did all of this I noticed a huge speed increase throughout the whole system. The reason why I wrote this was in hopes to help someone out.If anyone has anything to add have at it.

Take care

Thanks for the guide, Araxis.

Personally I found that my Mandy 9.1 only runs 'slow as molasses' on a default setup. Using a different windowmanager (read me sig) and disabling most of the ridiculous number of services that run on startup has cured it for me.

Downloading the nvidia drivers - always a good option, especially if you want to have anything fancy in the WM (lots of decoration), not to mention anything 3D.

Recompiling your kernel. Now, I agree that it is good for your health , but I don't know that it would make a tremendous amount of difference to the speed of it. Almost everything in a stock-Mandrake kernel that can be made as a loadable module is made as a loadable module, so perhaps only loading things at startup that you need at startup would help. I know that I don't have my TV card modules loaded at startup, and I'm sure that if I did, it would make a (very small) difference.

Anyway, cheers for your input.

I hate to tell you - but if you didn't make a bzImage and copy it to /boot and setup your bootloader to use it you are still running your old kernel.
