OK, I have Installed Mandrake Linux 8.2 (i know it is old, but i don't wanna d/l the new one, cause i don't have a burner) a little while ago, on a hdd which i partitioned to use about 5 gig for linux and the rest, 35 gig, for windows. But now I need to know 3 things:
1.) How can i access the windows partition from Konqueror. (and the linux one from windows)
2.) How do i install drivers for my sound/video card(which i d/led already) and
3.) How do i install a game i d/led?
I am terribly new (and terribly lost) i Linux, but i'd really like to get to know it, so i would really appreciate any help that u guys can offer!!
First in konqueror type /mnt. See what this gives you. If there is something called /dev/hdd1 or win that is probably your windows partition and you can try to go into that. If you only have a cdrom and a floppy listed open up a terminal. Type [i[su[/i] to get root power. Then mkdir /mnt/windows (you can change windows to whatever you want) Next, assuming that you have installed windows on the first partition of the drive type mount /dev/hdd1 /mnt/windows and then you can close the terminal, go into konqueror and type /mnt/windows and you should see your files. For drivers, check on the manufactor's site, many are now providing drivers. Once you download you can probably open a terminal, su into root, and type sh drivername and something should happen. And for the game, is it something that ends with .tar.gz or .rpm? If it is .tar.gz look [rul=http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/answers.php?action=viewarticle&artid=15]here[/url] if it rpm go into terminal, su into root, and then rpm -ivh filename the ivh stands for install, verbose (saying what it does), and hash (creates hash marks for progress)
Do i just type the username as root, and then the root password?
Couse i tried that, and it didnt work, so i was just wodering...
Also, How can i set the program, file and config permissions for normal user to a level that they can configure everything, without having to type the root password...?
