9.1 network install
I'm trying to install linux on my friend's laptop, but his cdrom is giving us problems, so I thought I'd try a network install. I followed the install.txt instruction to make a network install boot disk ($ dd if=network.img of=/dev/fd0). I boot his computer from the disk and it says: "SYSLINUX 1.67 Mandrake Linux Boot failed"
Alternatively, I happened to boot up once without plugging in the network cable and got a slightly different message:
SYSLINUX 1.67 Mandrake Linux Copyright (C) 1994-2001 H. Peter Anvin
Boot failed: please change disks and press any key to continue.
Now, admittedly, I'm pretty much just winging it at this point. We went through hell just to get XP off the damn thing. Why his CD isn't working I have no idea. Since there is, at this point, no software on the system outside of the BIOS and whatever boot disk we have inerted at the time, I'm opretty sure it's a hardware issue, but he's not sure when he'll be able to get to a Best Buy to get it fixed.
Has anyone done a successful network install of 9.1? What steps did you go through?
Thnx.
