10.0 OE -> 10.1 upgrade issues

Hello, I just upgraded from Mandrake 10.0 to Mandrake 10.1 OE, and there are some issues that I have now. I used the Mandrake 10.1 Official DVD that came with February issue of Linux Magazine. So I am not sure if that would be like the 3 Official CDs or four. I would guess 3, since usually the 4th is for Club members.
First just so you know I did the "upgrade" install. Some on IRC told this was a mistake and I was better of by doing a fresh install. I was just scared that I wouldn't know exactly what to do and that I would maybe lose my /home partition.
This was also my first upgrade of Linux I ever did, so yea I am a newbie.

Ok now to my problems:

1. After the install, LOTS of symlinks were wrong (especially in /usr/lib) and I had to fix them manually. Is there anything that can be done about this? I guess this is another reason for doing a fresh install.

2. I have a cable internet connection that goes through a router. For some reason with 10.1 at bootup eth0 always fails. And in the taskbar I have that little connection icon with an x in it saying that eth0 is down. If I go to MCC and go to network, Manage connections it displays eth0, correct TCP/IP settings and Options, however under Information it doesnt display any info. Its like the card is not assoicated with eth0.
I can go new connection, cable, and just click next, and it creates it fine, and then connects.
I have Realtek RTL-8139 card. So when I create this new connection, it is called eth0: Realtek|RTL-8139. However it never saves this setting. Upon restart eth0 fails and I have to set up the connection again. Relogging though is fine, and connection works.

3. I have a Sandisk 256 MB USB stick. With 10.0 OE it worked fine. I place the stick in and automatically hard drive icon comes on the desktop, and I am able to browse it (/mnt/removable). Upon removing the stick, the icon disapreas. Now, when I place the stick in nothing appears to happen. If I try to run konqueror it doesnt start. Running konqueror from console just hangs, and cant start. however if I do ls /mnt/removable it lists the contents of the stick. If I remove the stick, then there is no removable in /mnt anymore. So it seems that it is mounted and unmounted fine, and that KDE is the problem somewhow. Someone on IRC said this was somewhat of a common problem with 10.1. I was also pointed to this bug report:

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13743

I am wandering if any1 has any suggestions regarding this.

I was told to set up urpmi mirrors and do urpmi --auto-select. And that that should update my system. I probably will try this, but I havent gotten around to setting up all my mirrors yet because my connection is slow. So any suggestions about this are appreciated.

4. I use Qt Designer. The editor in the QtDesigner now doesnt handle tabs well. If I press tab in it the writing line thingy (forgot what it called now sorry =[ ) jumps really far to the right. Like the bottom scrollbar becomes like 1 20th of the bottom width. In the preferences I have that my tabs are 4, so I am not sure whats going on.

Anyway, this post is long enough, and I am sure I'll have a few more issues as I play around some more. Any suggestions on any of these problems are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Latem

Ok I am pretty sure that the usb thing is a kde issue. I found this:

http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=22278

I added an update mirror to urpmi. Then I went to Software Updates, and from the list I selected to update a bunch of kdebase packages, as well kde multimedia common package which selected other packages as well. In one of the changes to kde-multimedia-common it says fixed konqueror or KDE freezeing when using USB stick. Also for some reason the kdebase packages also had to add a bunch of koffice and libkoffice packages. Before starting the update download it sayd that it needed to delete some libkoffice package, which it did. Then it downlaoded 40 packages. After download it did verifing signatures, upon which it said that some kdebase package had a bad signature, do u wish to continue? i said yes. Then it threw out a big dialog box saying all bunch of packages were conflicting versions or something. nothing got installed.

After that I restarted my computer and tried my usb stick, which made kongueror freeze like beofre. So I restarted again, and then went to Software Updates, and just selected the kde-multimedia-common package, which also selected a few other ones. I did this because it said the usb fix was there. Those installed fine. Then I restarted the computer, and when I was logging in it took a really long time to do the "Starting Services" (or something) part of the KDE loading (its the 2nd icon from left in KSplash). After that I tried my usb stick, and still konqueror froze like before. Also now Kopete doesnt work. I run it fine, but it freezes when I try to connect. Amarok is also messed up. It doesnt go forward. Like after a song is done playing the display says the next song is playing, but there is no sound. And just general controls are mssed up. When I press Stop, the display acts like the song is stopped, but the song still continues playing.

So my KDE is pretty messed up now I think. What should I do? I think I should try and do a full update of kdebase stuff. But that didnt work the first time...
I never did an update before, but I thought it would be pretty straight forward. I thought urpmi should resolve all the dependacy crap by itself. How are you suppose to do software updates? Was I suppose to have a main and contrib mirror maybe? All I had was an update mirror.

And I still havent resolved the issue with network connection. I have to make a new connection every time I start my computer.

Please help.
Thanks,
Latem

well I did
Code:
urpmi --auto-select
Some 380 packages (1.3 GB) later, it seems that that solved all my problems. USB stick seems to work fine. It remembered my eth0 settings, and that doesnt fail at bootup. Even the tab issue with Qt Designer is fixed.

The only thing now, I think I saw something fail near the end of bootup, but it was too fast for me too see it right. I think it might have been xinetd or somehting. Again I am not sure what I saw cuz it was at the end and it went by really fast, and KDE appeared. Is there a log or something for the bootup rpocess and that OK or FAILED list?

Thanks,

Latem
