The width of the logo plus the ad is 818. If this is a big problem I would have to shrink the logo down by 20 or so.

You can shrink the logo and decrease the width of the left column (the one with the user names in it)

I like the more text-based forum design. It looks more consolodated, and as a plus to you guys, reduces a bit of bandwidth I'd guess.

the design without the buttons *looks* better, though i'm not sure it's more accessible. text links at a strategic place across the top would be better than buttons, imo.

another annoying thing about the buttons is that sometimes only 8 of them show up -- 3 on top, 5 on the bottom -- instead of ten on most of the pages. i'm not sure why it's doing that, but it looks really bad, like a pyramid shape instead of symmetrical.

after a couple of days playing around w/the new look, i have one very humble suggestion. usually the first thing i do after login is check my cp for any ongoing threads i'm part of. i do that because i feel those threads need attention first, once i've replied if applicable i go on to new threads, to try and help out. for a couple of days i've been trying to force myself to use the menu, instead of the buttons on top. i've been fairly successful, but, i'd like to see the cp link maybe at the very bottom of the menu, so it is more accessible. my reasoning for this, and i've put quite a bit of thought into it, is i really like the top structure of the menu, i like the way it "prompts" users to search first, or have a look at the hcl before posting. i think that's a good thing, however, the cp link in the middle of the menu makes me kind of search for it. i think it wouild be better at the very bottom, more "automatic" if you will. these are just my opinions, thx for listening as always.

but couldn't anyone say the same thing for the link/s they use the most? to put them at the top, bottom, or where ever? the idea is to make it more usable for all, not just one person.

i have to agree with you on that point. as i stated it's a personal preference, and, if i didn't say anything at all, then others who may share that preference may not post either. so i felt i should at least mention it and see if anyone else uses the cp in the manner i do. it also gives others who don't use the cp the opportunity to state their cases, as well as, sparcs the interest of others as yourself. i think you have a very valid point, and, it's just what this thread needs is feedback. thx for a different perspective, it'll give me something to think on further.

no worries. it's just so interesting, because i for example almost never use the cp link. i either go to search and enter my username, or usually keep up with my threads with email notification. and there's probably someone else who uses the forums home link more, and someone else who uses some other link, and so on. it's a hard site to layout navigation for.

This brings up a good point though, that the link order is important and should be considered. If there is a consensus on something, I'll rearrange accordingly.

I agree that the new layout encourages people to search first. The thing I do for UserCP is: I use opera and close with that window open so it opens when I use opera again I'm never without LQ! I also do the same for the "view new posts" page. What also help me is I made my own html page with my favorite web links and include my favorite LQ forums and UserCP page.

I wonder if it would be viable to have maybe 2 or 3 menu categories down the side like on the wiki:
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Main_Page

Something like:
Code:
=============
Main Menu
=============
* Home
* Linux Forums
* Linux HCL
* Linux Tutorials
* Linux Wiki
* Distro Reviews
* Book Reviews
* Press Releases
* LQ Calendar
* LQ Memberlist
* LQ Quizzes
* Site FAQ
* Logout

==========
Search
==========
* Search (a box maybe?)
* Search HCL
* Search LAs

================
User Options
================
* Subscribed Threads
* My Threads
* My Posts
* User CP

i like that idea. maybe not as big as the menus at the wiki, i think the current size is good, but the multiple menus, i like.
