Question what exactly is meant by a 'post'?

is a post a question or an answer?
because i've been asking and answering... and neither seem to be making the number of my posts go up... it's been saying 11 for the amount of posts for a couple of days now...

Posts in certain areas (eg: General) don't go toward your post count.

it because I think, that some people would just post about topics that have nothing to do with computers to make their post count go up, even tho they haven't answered or asked many questions

Why do I get the feeling you're trying to inflate your post count?

Anyhow, it is designed to prevent people from artificially inflating their post count...

General is an area designated for off-topic posts. Though we consider post count no indicator of knowledge or status, a decision was made long ago that posts in General were not constructive towards a post count. While General is a part of the community, posts there generally do not contribute to the larger Linux community and the site's goals of promoting and supporting Open Source.

In short: don't worry about your post count. Have an enjoyable and productive time here on LQ!

another definition of 'post' - an individual piece of text by one author in a thread. (ie, this, right here, what I'm writing and you're reading, is a post.)

A thread: a grouping of posts talking about the same idea/question/issue/topic.

Post counts should be abandoned altogether imho.

They serve no useful purpose other than for people to compare their e-peens and make unnecessary posts.

JMHO, YMMV.

Many people agree with that, and many disagree. Post counts have been discussed at length several times in the past -- search the forums.
