System specs?

Just a thought... I see that alot of people (myself included) put their system specs in their signature, so as to avoid the embarrasing possibility of asking a question and forgetting to tell people what you have for a machine. I'm curious, is it possible to include this as a requirement for sign up so that when people sign up for LQ they are forced to list their system specs? I would like to see it similar to the 'distro' option found under people's names. Might help to speed up responses, and also give us a round about way of finding out what kind of machines people are running linux on.

Just a thought, ignore it if you wish (especially if it's been asked before).

It might be a nice idea, but for the usual reasons, it's not really possible. First off, some posters will lie to make themselves feel better. Others won't want to give away the specs to their valuable $15 dollar 486 box, and so on. Most people that sign up probably just want to ask a question, not really wanting to fill out a mile long questionare to see if anyone here can actually help.

That said, it would be nice if the occasional person listed at least their distro...

Another problem, which machine do I list? I have 9 computers running myself...

This I believe would only be an annoyance to newcomers to the site if they are bombarded with a long list of "required" questions just to sign up.
