How about some avatars for moderators

Hi all, now that linuxquestions.org has this amazing server with 4 36G disks how about a couple of avatars?... I would like to see the moderators and the people with over 1,000 post with some kind of avatar, I think it would be cool for them because they work hard and help a lot of people. What do you guys think?

- I don't think it will make the site slower because only few people will have them.

It's unlikely to make it slower, but it is likely to make it uglier. If you look through the previous posts about avatars you'll find most established members saying that they make sites look vulgar and tacky, and will never be part of LinuxQuestions. and of course the number of posts doesn't have a relation to how much someone knows anyway, i think i'm just about the best example of that huh?

I concur, I personally hate avatars and wouldn't use them if I had the option to.. They only make the site ungly and unprofessional looking.
Something like Jeremy has is simple, small and doesn't actually cause any of these issues I stated I believe above. But that is where I'm getting to. I'm not saying all would do it but who's to control what avatar they use? I've browsed some forums and some just pick the most awful pictures which just truly make the site distasteful.

That's why I'm against it at all means.

lol@best example (This is a guy that wrote an application for ripping and encoding DVD's and he "doesn't" know anything) Well I understand that some avatars will make the site uglier but thats why I said "Only moderators and 1,000 post and more" and I also think that all moderators should have the same avatar and all members with over 1,000 post should also have the same avatar, Jeremy has an avatar and it looks cool (Thats what I think, I don't know about you guys), I don't see that the forum looks ugly or vulgar when he post a message.. Do you guys think it looks ugly?.. Well it was just another suggestion, the site does look good like it is but I just wanted to see something different when a moderator post a message, something that will "stand out"....

You get a birthday cake if your birthday = sysdate. It's not an avatar. If you go to the bottom of the Forums main page, the list of LQ members who are currently online and the list of LQ members with birthdays are listed.

My 2 cents: please, no avatars. Seriously. Please, no, not now, not ever. If you really really really dig a certain image, make it your wallpaper. You don't need to see it below your LQ nick. -- J.W.

I'll take a wild stab at the birthday cake avatar, it was for a poster celebrating his/her birthday?

I'll take another stab that the birthday cake disappear's magically and mysteriously as it appear's...the day after the poster's birthday, making finding the post with the illegal birthday-cake-avatar all the more difficult.

*at self*

I too don't think I'd like to see any other avatars other than Jeremy's. It's easily distinguishable when you are scrolling down a thread and see a single avatar to know that Jeremy was the one who contributed that response, it sets the owner of this place apart from the rest of us.

As far as LQ Addicts/Gurus or Moderators having avatars:
I think it's often overlooked that all of these people are still no more than members of the site. Moderators do have other responsibilities of course, and help out in other ways; however their participation in threads is a lot more on the member level than anything else. By associating a moderator with an avatar would only do more to place the Moderator's on a "Us and Them" relationship, rather than what we are, fellow members with a bit more responsibility.

Cool
