Apology

Maybe this is in the wrong place, but this is where I posted my first question, so this is where I guess an apology should go.

I am new to this forum, and to Linux, and asked a newbie question.

I always thought a forum was where individuals helped each other out, to share information and save time looking for information. I requested information for a driver without first looking everywhere else on the web.

Onebuck answered by stating I needed to do some work myself. I had done some, but obviously not enough. I had to start somewhere though, and I mistakenly thought this was the place.

I am totally new to Linux. I have never posted a question to this forum before, and was unaware there was a minimum level of difficultly required.

I apologize. My only excuse is that I have only had experience with windows based forums, where the users are willing to help even the dumb newbies.

I won't bother the illustrious, intelligent users of this forum again with my mundane inquiries.

Again. I apologize for wasting your time.

OK, yes he was a little off the track i'd say, you did provide more useful information than the average post, so it did seem odd to go at you like that - he was polite and still informative though. Having said that though, you then DID get help, and AFAIK you DID get your wireless working... what's the problem? You have a *much* less annoying signature than he does, take comfort in that. If you can't take a little bit of stick though, you really won't get far, he really wasn't "rude" or anything...

How did I go at him? And how was I off track? The information was there for him to read. He/She just didn't go far enough.

What's wrong with my sig? Violate the LQ rules? I don't think so. This is a web forum not usenet therefore one should expect page content. If it fills your page then increase the page. The information in my sig is useful and used to reference others to information.

If you don't like it don't have too read it!

Moved: This thread is more suitable in LQ Suggestions&Feedback and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

Mod Note: All questions are welcome at LQ.org, and while there can be no guarantees that every response to a given question will resolve the issue for the original poster, chances are reasonably good that with someone will be able to offer helpful pointers. I'd encourage you to stay awhile.... at least for me, LQ has helped me immensely

i think TBH you're both complaining about nothing. i know *very* well that it's so easy to say the wrong thing or phrase it in the wrong way... does it really matter either way though in this instance?

it's horrible. it's far too long, is overly complicated and annoying. imho. and contains far too much slack nonsense.

It's just something you have to learn to put up with - the elitist, "RTFM" attitude from a minority of members. It must boost the insecure egos of those that adopt it.

Brian, did you read the post? It's a little on the short side maybe, but a long way short of RTFM.

To me it didn't seem that bad, but I could see how offence could be taken, but we all write the odd email like that, and, God forbid, the odd response here.

I do agree with Chris on the long signature, but it's not as bad as the new habit of responses quoting the while preceding post.

Ooops, no I didn't. I just jumped in at the deep end, as usual. It's one of my pet hates - anything condescending, dismissive, that sort of thing. But I have seen a lot worse than onebuck's response. My turn for an apology.

It's one of the drawbacks of communicating totally by typing, you miss all the nuances and change of expression. Add to which, not everyone uses English as their native language (do I include the USAians in that? ) and I am surprised that we get so few misunderstandings!

Your system must be pretty slow to scroll that slow.

I stand by my sig and will remain that way. No LQ rules are violated. And as I said before this is the Web not a Usenet group.

Welcome to the new Century! The web is a great tool that will be around for a long time. Communication on the forums is very informative and yes a lot is missed by not having a personal link during the communication between each other.

Slack nonsense? For a moderator your pretty selective and not very objective..

oh good grief, this is just about the most petty thread on LQ I can remember. an initial "complaint" about nothing much, a rebuttal about nothing much, follow on objections about even less. i honestly couldn't care less about your signature, it was just a flippant throwaway comment. who cares...? just move on.

Then as a mod why did you make them? You started the comments that don't mean much.
