It's too short. Returning a few minutes later to fix a typo results in that silly "Last edited by ... "
Why can't it be as on Gentoo forums where I can edit posts without this note until there's a reply?
In most posts in most forums, I submit the post, then proof read, then edit. If I'm at work, I'm posting in forum (rather than actually working) because I'm waiting for a compile or test or CVS update or some such (we really need a faster CVS server). If what I'm waiting for finishes, I interrupt that post/read/edit cycle and may not get back to it for quite a while. So lots of my posts are edited much later, even for simple typos.
Who cares! I'm not trying to prove I type well the first time. I'm answering or asking a question. Even if hours go by before the edit, more people will see the corrected copy than the original, and I see no reason they shouldn't know I didn't type it right the first time. Those who see it before I edit it have seen typos before.
I have assumed the comment shows up after the post is read rather than replied to here at LQ.
Which makes sense. I could quote your unedited post after reading it.
EDIT:This post has been edited!

Well, Gentoo forums uses PHPBB and we use VBulletin. That may be the reason. But, really, does it matter whether the message is there or not?
Not at all. If it bothered me that much, I'd spellcheck and proof-read and make sure my message was totally perfect before I posted so it wouldn't need editing later.
Cheers

@johnsfine
I see, your opinion is different on this matter. Hope you recognize my right to feel the way I do? After all, they tell us differences between species is the very base for mankind's progress and evolution.
@XavierP
Sounds like a perfectly valid reason.
@2damncommon
Not sure, but I think there's 1 minute time limit.
@dragonslayer48dx & archtoad6
That really wasn't the point. The reason for editing was meant as an example. Let's rephrase. If I return later to add or edit because there was a typo or I learned something after posting and I'd like to improve my posting or ... Use your imagination.

I see what you're saying. As far as the "Last edited by..." comment, it used to bother me, too. I just ignore it now, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if it disappeared.

Openness and transparency are key attributes at LQ. Knowing a post has changed is just a small piece of ensuring those. Not sure how that would insinuate discount pricing.
There's a "last edited" tag when someone edits their posts? I never noticed in the 8 years I've been on this site. Ok, maybe I did but who cares really?

OK, now I know what I do not like about it. Enforcement.
Let's sum it up.
I do not like anything enforced on me.
You have to do it because we encounter ethical and unethical people here, the usual mix, unethical are the majority. And you can do it because it's your forum.
