I started working with computers as early as 1970. I wrote application programs in FORTRAN and BASIC.I wrote programs in Octal code for Intel's 8080A processor in 1979. I have guided COBOL programmers to develop programs required for engineering and design applications. I have also worked in Germany to develop a module in Assembly Language for 8085 based PLC in "KOMPASS" a CASE Tool environment in 1984.
After MS Windows introduction, I was using PC from 80386 era (1990). My interest in Linux became serious in 2005. I tried Slackware, Knoppix, Suse and finally settled with Ubuntu. From 2008, I am using only Ubuntu with out any dual boot arrangement. The main reason for shifting to Ubuntu was security. No virus and no false alarm about hardware.
I have done awareness program on FOSS to more than 400 students in my college and nearby college. I conduct one day workshop on "Ubuntu for All" regularly. I have also converted 3 laboratories(each 36 PC) to Ubuntu, MySQL and other FOSS. I have one more lab with dual boot so that my students are not denied the opportunity to learn MS proprietary technology like .net, VB etc.
I recommend single boot with Ubuntu and single partition. We enjoy virus and anti-virus free computing. I have lot of ideas to develop but my position and age does not permit to develop products. I am trying to motivate my students to contribute towards FOSS development.
Wish List:
- I would like to develop an extension to Open Office for indexing any document as done in "WordStar 7"
- Develop a CASE Tool for Data Base Application
Wish all Linux enthusiasts a very happy year.
