Hoping to get into DevOps

Hey all,

This site was recommended as a way to get involved in the Linux community. It is one thing to practice on your own but, being social on a forum like this is even better.

I have been in I.T. since '95 working with small companies mostly. Not much Enterprise system exposure... except for my last job where I was Lead Support Tech for an Enterprise SaaS solution. This is where I got my feet wet with Linux. Unfortunately, the company sold and there went my aspirations of moving into DevOps. I am hoping to change that.

I have decided to get my Linux + cert... just started studying. Found an awesome site called LinuxAcademy.com. If there is anyone out there looking to do the same thing, hit me up. Would love a study partner.

Looking forward to great things!

Rod

Then you best first decide what side of the fence you want to be on. Because with DevOps all roles involved were not created equal. DevOps is not a job title, a group of people, a product group or a company: it's a movement. Meaning just like with other things that bubble up getting labeled, like "slow food movement" or "cocooning", some companies have this in their genes, have already been "living" that for years, while others try to adapt to a craze they're not even the right group of people, product group or a company for...

Agree 100% unSpawn... it is going to be tough to "break through" and land that perfect job. I know it is going to take a while. With a little luck and persistence, I will make it happen. Need to get some decent experience with a good team. Most likely will have to start from square one again...

People in DevOps are usually programmers who can also do systems administration, not the other way around.

Someone needs to take care of the systems that the programmers use (e.g., test servers, code repositories, and software version deployments). Keeping it all in open source is what I am looking to do.
