Be prepared for an assault of stupid questions :-)

Hi Linux Folks,

I had Suse Linux running back in the 90s but moving around a lot put paid to that.

I've just installed Suse Linux 42.1 on a Dell 780 and by crashing about a lot, managed to get connected to my BT hub and the Internet.

I have a list as long as my arm upon which is 42.2,Samba,
Open Office, DNS-320 Sharecentre

But first, I think, getting Samba running is a priority.

I have three computers connected to one screen, one keyboard and one mouse via a ktm switch but I also have an android tablet outside that loop.

The three computers run: Suse Linux Leap 42.1,Win 10 and Win XP.

Linux is wired to the hub but the windows and the android machine are linked by WiFi.

It would be good to be able to be in control of files on the win machines from Linux.

If there is a quick and easy way to get Samba up and running I'd love to know where to find it.

I promise I will ask daft questions but Linux has changed so much in 20 years!

Happy new year

Chris

Hi again Chris,

Sorry and yes I did move your other thread from Newbie to here. The thing is you've said the same thing in both threads, mostly introduction, followed by a quick question.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ar-4175596584/

Once again, my suggestion is that you start a new thread in the Newbie or General forums, however you title it saying that you are looking for Samba configuration assistance and you describe what you've done so far on that.

Hi rtmistler

Still finding my way about.

I've looked at the tree at the top of this forum and deduce it is the 'memberintro' section. Is that right?

At the top you'll see Home, Forums, HCL, and so forth. Click on Forums and you'll see a list of forums. You can click on a particular forum, such as Newbie or Linux-General (Be aware that there is an open Non-Linux General which is more open discussion versus technical)

Once browsing within a forum you can click Create Thread, a button near the top and it will allow you to create a thread. Title it something such as "Working with Samba and Trying to set it up" and put in the details which you've tried. People will ask if you merely say, "Hey, how do you set up samba?", therefore best to offer at least some details of your efforts.

Thanks rtmistler,

Hardware problems have now overtaken me and take precedence, sadly. Back to Samba soon I hope.
