Almost brand new to Linux

Hello everyone. IT student here that is having a little hard time adjusting to the Linux command line (I'm fine with the GUI it works great). My teacher at school is a real chops buster and I want to do well in class so I was hoping I could get some help here. I will be reading my book this week and trying to figure out this lab that seems impossible. Also he wants this question answered, "Can anybody tell me why we must execute the command IPCONFIG like this /sbin/ipconfig? ". Any help would be much appreciated from this struggling newbie lol!

Welcome to LQ!!

We generally do not help on homework unless there is clear evidence of some work already done by the student.

Two hints:
1. "ipconfig" is not a Linux command---Google will give you the equivalent (but you should have gotten this in class)
2. If someone says you have to run a command with a full path name, then try the following:

Suppose the command is "jump" and it is kept in /sbin. Try these versions:
1. In your home directory, type "jump"
2. In your home directory, type "/sbin/jump"
3. In the /sbin directory, type "jump"
4. In the /sbin directory, type "./jump"

Try the same thing running as root ("su -" to become root with the root environment.)
