If you upgraded the kernel, that could lead to problems - you could compile a 3.2 kernel, that should not cause any problems.

Well ubuntu probably uses a newer kernel... hence your device is supported and working. Personally I would not reinstall a whole different distro just to get a newer kernel - but horses for courses...
