WiFi speed

I have recently installed SuSe 10.0 and have a dual boot sys with windows XP. I have configured my atheros wifi card in SuSe but i am not getting the same speed which i get in Windows XP. I didnt install the madwifi drivers instead used the system drivers is it because of this???

I cannot answer your question, but with my card with atheros chip can give me full speed with madwifi.

I'm using the madwifi drivers with atheros chipset a/b/g card and am experiencing same issue on my dual boot laptop. Under windows I get better signal strength and, hence, better speed.

I recall reading something about being able to set the power output level for the card (under Linux) so am guessing that's the problem. Unfortunately haven't had time to research it further... just a vague memory at this point.

More info on my particulars.

iwconfig returns:

Code:
ath0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:0 kb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity=0/3
          Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
Link Quality=0/94 Signal level=-95 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:284397 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Note I'm not currently connected to anything, but there's my transmit power setting.

When I issue the comand:
Code:
]# /sbin/iwconfig ath0 txpower 30mW
iwconfig complains that:
Code:
Warning: Driver for device ath0 has been compiled with version 20
of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 19.
Some things may be broken...
So it appears there's nothing I can do about the slow speed short of switching to LFS and compiling everything myself from scratch.
