Since i started on my linux journey all i have wanted to do was crack the WEP key of this business next door to me, i have come close (kinda, maybe, i think)
please stop what your thinking i do not have bad intentions, i REALLY (and i do mean really) wanna do it so i can work out a way to kkep noobs out of wifi networks, i can make some cash helping small companies out.

but seriously i am still a noob so ill need step by step help, i would even appreciate it if you could point me in a decent direction as all the reading i have done thus far does not help me or is written for linux pro's.

Instead of trying "crack" your business neighbor, why not perform a more "professional" security audit and penetration testing using a standard.
The Open Source Security Testing Methodology Manual (OSSTMM) is a peer-reviewed methodology for performing security tests and metrics.
k look to the miss that told me to learn linux, why would you take time out of your day to try rip me off on a forum site?
i am quite adept at linux its just the slackware wifi commands and connecting that i havn't read into...
k well where i am is i have faked authentication and i have successfully
started packet injection/capturing . now i have spoken to the dude who runs the business next door to me and he let me set up my laptop next to the router because i have a new problem. its not "HOW TO DO IT" that im stuck with:
even though i am right in next to the wifi router, the signal of my wifi is really poor, making packet injection/capturing really slow (bout 100 000 packets) an hour. the signal power is only like 20 (a strong signal is around 80)
how would one boost their wifi in linux backtrack 2?
p.s i want to get to a point where i dont need commercial software to protect a wifi system, so links to software sites don't help, but i appreciate the links thus far because i have been reading into how they protect a system....by the by, all except one of those comercial programs are easily worked around.
Look, you just don't seem to get it. The LQ forum has strict rules prohibiting discussions about cracking, whether it be WEP/WPA or anything else. If you have questions about how to lock down a system, by all means post them, but knock off with the crap about how to crack WEP.
You have to know how to hack and crack to effectively "fight" it, but this is not the forum to ask those questions in. I refer you to a whitehat forum called "Ethical Hackers.net". Don't post stupid questions like this here anymore, you'll quickly lose respect.

Thanks for the hint, I'll have a look at that site as well. I don't consider myself a "hacker" since I don't do it that much, but it's always interesting and definitely useful when solving problems.
I got this laptop's wireless card finally working just the way I want it to, and now I'm running WPA/AES instead of WEP (that I begun with, to get rid of possible non-encryption errors) -- thanks for the numerous LQ threads, trial and error Time for a cup of coffee..
Whilst we don't condone discussion of black hat activities, this thread clearly hasn't gone that way. I'd be more concerned how many users are going out of the way to say they aren't going to be involved in this thread... by posting in this thread. what's that all about?
And yet, a discussion about cracking the WEP key of a business, including methods such as packet injection, for the stated purpose of earning some extra cash by finding ways to prevent such mischief is OK? Note that nowhere does the poster claim to have the business owner's permission for such antics.

A little consistency, please.
Agreed. I saw a thread get closed for the possibility that someone might mention a way of obtaining copyrighted software illegally. The OP is clearly attempting to do something illegal. I cannot see how this thread can be in the realm of ok things to do or discuss.
no, it's not an ok thing to discuss, but the thing is that it's not being discussed... this thread contains no active discussion about wep cracking, just people saying that it's against the rules, and needlessly mocking / insulting the OP. Either way though, this thread is certainly not benefiting anyone and never will, so i'll close it now.
