Angry Unable to connect to Cisco devices via console/USB cable

Hi All

I'm trying to connect to various Cisco Routers and switches via a Cisco roll/console cable. My Laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D, dual boots Win XP and Novell SLED 10.1 works great under Windows, but having trouble under SLED10) doesn't have a native 9 pin serial port(s), so I'm trying to use a USB to Serial adapter cable via one of the USB ports. I've done some online searches, and as I understand it I need to ensure that my USB cable/roll cable is recognized. First of all I don't know how to do this. Secondly I need to install and configure a terminal emulation program like Minicom to set up the port/cable parameters. Again I don't know how to do this, (sorry guys I'm a bit of a Linux newbie). Can anyone help ??

Cheers

well the rollover cable is a non issue.. you can't "recognise" it... it's just some wires. the usb adapater is the difference... you've not said what the device is.. quite likely it'll be supported by the usb-serial module... http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x356.html after that's loaded and dmesg says it's there (presumably listed by lsusb too) then just use minicom or c-kermit to conect to /dev/ttyUSB0 (i expect that's the right device name) and off you go. minicom looks simplest and nicest, but as you get mre used to it, you'll probably prefer c-kermit any day of the week.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your help. Farslayer, I've followed the instructions in your link. It seemed pretty straight forward. However, when I ran the command "sudo minicom", I thought I would be looking at my switch prompt, however; I received the following message "minicom:cannot open /dev/ttys0: input/output error". In the instructions it recommends buying a USB to serial adapter that supports linux. I'm not sure if mine does is supported under linux and if this is the root of my problem. Any help as to what this error message is and how to resolve it would be appreciated.

Acid_kewpie, I've taken a look at your link and to be honest I wouldn't know how to go about implementing that stuff. The device that was reported when I ran "dmesg | grep tty" was "ttyS0". I'm not sure how to change it to "ttyUBS0" if thats what I need to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

if you do the dmesg | grep tty with the usb to serial adapter removed from the laptop, does it still show ttyS0 ?

Just trying to figure out if the tty device you are seeing is actually the usb-to-serial converter or if it's something else in the laptop.

Thanks for getting back to me Farslayer.

I've managed to sort it. I searched on line using some of the error message "/dev/ttys0: input/output error" as a search string. I found some one else who had a very similar problem, turns out that instead of typing S0 in minicom I typed s0. So, basically minicom didn't recognise the device name reported by "dmesg | grep tty". I've corrected this and am up and running. Now I can get on with my CCIE.

Thanks again for your help.

Oh....... I've got another long running issue with my SLED10 install. Do you know where I can get hold of the most up to date copy of NDISWRAPPER. If so do let me know, I've struggled for ages to get my wireless adapter to work under Linux, and I think I need to upgrade to the newest version.

Take care

Nevski
