Ubuntu 6.10 wi-fi mystery

Dear kind and gracious linux-ers - please help me to solve my wireless mystery.

I am using a Toshiba Equium L20-197, with an Atheros AR5005G wireless chip and a Belkin router (a,b, and g compatible). I've been trying to run ubuntu 6.10 but cannot connect to the wireless.
I have not yet installed 6.10 but am running it from the LiveCD - since I don't want to actually go to the partitioning etc. if I can't get the wireless to work (I need this since I work from home).

Anyways....Have tried copying all the IP, Subnet Mask etc. info from my Windows setup into the network setup for U6.10 - but doesn't work. Have run the ifconfig - but this reports no wireless extensions - nor does the iwconfig (although this does produce an access point series of numbers!). The route command produces no new info that I have not already told the network panel - but, interestingly - the "iwlist ath0 scan" command accurately reports the channel that my wireless router is on - and - here's the thing - it also produces info on my neighbour's wireless setups - 2 of them Lynksys and Sky9272 - so clearly the wireless card is working and clearly U6.10 is able to access it for scanning info. (By the way, don't assume that I know what any of the above means - I just copied things from various threads I've read).

But therein lies the source of my mystery.

Incidentally, the Knoppix LiveCD let me connect to the net wirelessly - but only by jumping on my neighbour's unencrypted network - but that's another story (so clearly the bloody Atheros works..??!!??!).

So - please help so I can get rid of this Windows crap and start getting Linuxed as fast as possible.

Many, many thanks in advance.

Steve

Problem solved!!

Aha! Fellow Linuxers - I have solved the problem of my wireless mystery. In Ubuntu 6.10 I did NOT enter any IP addresses etc. but merely entered my WEP encryption code as hexedecimal XXX etc. and left it as Automatic Configuration (DHCP) - I DID NOT enter ANY IP addresses etc. - the only thing I entered was my WEP code as hex. So - can confirm that Atheros AR5005G does work with Ubuntu 6.10.

I will now try to partition my hard drive and install Ubuntu onto my hard drive for good!

Thumbs up All done - but new probs....!

In case anyone reads this thread - I have now succesfully installed Ubuntu and it works like a dream!

However - having installed it on a different PC (Tecra A8) the damn sound doesnt work - even though it detects the cards etc.

Anyway - this is clearly an issue for a different post......
