setting up radius server on my Redhat box

Hi

I want to use a radius server on my Redhat Linux box so I can use it to authenticate my wireless access point.

I have downloaded a copy of Livinston's Radius, this I can install if needs be. However, there is a reference to radius in the /etc/services file.

So I assume there must be a radius server installed??

Can anyone tell me how this radius server can be used? i.e where are the config files?

I am familiar with using Livingston's raddb, about 5 years ago I used it at my old job, but it looks like that is no longer being updated.

Many thanks in advance

I have those entries also on my redhat installation, but no radius server installed.

You can also check out http://www.freeradius.org/

I have installed FreeRadius, it went like a dream no problems at all....... However, when I ran the radiusd -X (which btw looked ok until the last line when I read)

There appears to be another RADIUS server already running on the authentication port UDP 1812.

How do I find out what the other radius server is/where it is? And can I either uninstall FreeRadius and us the one installed on the box, or uninstall the original one and Use FreeRadius.

Any help will be REALLY appreciated

try
lsof | grep -i radius

netstat -a
should also list all active ports, etc.

The two docs below might help if you insist on using Livingston Radius. Personally, I would use FreeRadius.

Unless you are doing MAC authentication of wireless, you will definately need to use FreeRadius. Livingston Radius is very old and doesn't support 802.1X wireless authentication.

Instructions For Setting Up FreeRADIUS

So far I have found this article - http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/e..._5/index1.html
but is it very old. Do you have any more recent documentation on how to set it up? What I am doing is having one NIC of my linux router be dedicated to the Wireless Network, and my idea is to run FreeRADIUS on the router and use it to control access from clients attached to that network. That would mean the any packets that passw between my wired network and my WiFI network would have to first be checked by the RADIUS server.

Failing that model, I have VPN ( PPTP using POPTOP ) as a backup solution.

Most of the FreeRADIUS setup info related to wireless (that I've found) assumes that you will use an AP that supports a RADIUS server and is usually specific to a particular authentication method.

example: http://www.impossiblereflex.com/8021x/eap-tls-HOWTO.htm
A decent tutorial on EAP methods: http://www.iec.org/online/tutorials/...ods/index.html

You might also try the FreeRADIUS mailing list (wear appropriate flame-resistant attire). The archives are here: http://lists.cistron.nl/archives/fre...users/2004/05/
