running 2 nics on laptop wireless and wired??

Hi I've searched everywhere for an answer, and have come up with nothing....anyhow

My laptop running SUSE 10.0 has both a wired ethernet port and a wireless port. They both work kind of. What the problem is, is that when I plug in the cable I lose my internet connection. Or basically the wireless and wired connections fight over the internet access. I would ideally to have both access the internet.
So I have set the routing for both to the default gateway which is the router i use. I find myself having to restart the connections all the time. Which is annoying.

Can anyone help. please.

I would choose only one interface to use for the default route/gateway. Having 2 default routes screws things up, since the computer can't decide which interface to use.

this I did not understand that they get confused. Which now make perfect sense. The problem still lies in setting up a solution that allows me to use my wireless and wired network at the same time. I.E. copying data from my desktop to my laptop via the wired but using the wireless for an internet connection.

Would a static or reserved IP for they wired be a solution?

thanks heaps

Hmm,
an interesting problem (like many on this forum).
I can't see how a static IP would be any better than dynamic. I'd go for editing the routing table. 'Man route' shows that you can force a given interface for a specific route, so for the example you described I would configure wireless connection with a default gateway and leave the wired without a default gateway, specifying just the route to the desktop comp. This could be probably achieved by issuing
route add -host 192.168.1.1 dev eth0
or similar.
Let me know if it works,
Good luck!

I'm not at home at the moment but I have in the past set my wired nic's IP to a static address in another IP range. But this did not help when transfering between other computers on the netwrok, this is where the problem becomes most evident. If I'm to transfer from my laptop to another desktop on the network the wireless would default as the connection and take a very long time.

So would routing the wired nic back to the router be the best solution for transfering data between computers on the network?

Can I run both nics at the same time for increased speed?(This one might be a bit over the top)

Cheers.
