You can set mode, essid and offhand, you almost never have to change your networkid, as that's still there more or less for debugging, with the wireless tool: iwconfig.
/sbin/ifconfig ethN up
/sbin/iwconfig ethN mode managed
/sbin/iwconfig ethN essid houseofslack (for instance).
/sbin/dhcpcd ethN
To set them for boot, edit /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts
Also, you may want to download the patch file so as to make cardmgr load the newer orinoco_cs module. You can find that:
