network yes, internet no

hi,
I'v installed fedora core 4 just a couple of weeks ago, I succeed in installing madwifi and my wireless card seem to work (i pinged another pc succesfully), the problem is that fedora doesn't see other computers in the network (all win xp), and is not able to connect to internet.
I probably setted something in the wrong way but I can figure out what.
can you please help me, thank you

Can you ping your gateway? I assume your wireless router is serving as your gateway, correct? If you can ping other pc's, you should be able to ping your gateway. You will need to enter the IP address of the gateway into the network settings of Fedora, however that is done. As for "seeing" the xplodingpile machines, what do you mean - see them as in ping, or see them as in "network neighborhood" and access their resources?

ok, now I can acces internet too, but there were problems with my /etc/hosts file, I had to write it, cause it existed but was blank, and (I don't now how comes) gnome didn't like that.
every time I boot, I need to manually connect the device, from devide control, and after many errors in the process it get connected anyway.
With the network is still the same, I can't access other computers (win xp) and fedora can't see my workgroup, my network neighborhood!
p.s. I can ping my router/gateway.

thanks

So you have to set up your network card everytime you boot? Hmmm. Not a Fedora user, so I can't point you in the right direction as to which options to check, etc. Is there an option in the GUI you use to set up the network that says something like "start at boot"? Sounds like your network card is not set to "start" at boot.

As for seeing everything in "network neighborhood", that is an entirely different matter. I would get your network working consistently first, before tackling this. Basically what you will need to do is get Samba installed and set up. Samba is a network protocol/service that allows you to see windoze network shares, and allows you to share resources on your Linux box with windoze machines. With Fedora, you should be able to use your package manager (yum?) to install it. Not sure if there is a GUI in Fedora to set Samba up - there might be. If not, I'll see if I have some resources for manual configuration when you get to that point. I am not a Samba expert by any means, so others may be able to help out more.

Post back when you get your network working consistently first, then we'll tackle Samba.
