Network stops working when X is activated

This computer is running Debian Etch; I use a 802.11g card through ndiswrapper to access my network.
Recently (I'm not positive exactly when this started) I noticed the connection slowing down and losing packets. When I tried pinging the router, I recieved either no response or an absurdly high latency.
When I switch to the terminal (control-alt-f1, etc), however, the network operates fine (even when x is still running).
This log of pings to the router illustrates this:
Code:
#Started in terminal
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=6 ttl=64 time=1.27 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=7 ttl=64 time=1.28 ms
#Switched to x
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=8 ttl=64 time=1722 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=9 ttl=64 time=727 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=10 ttl=64 time=16828 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=11 ttl=64 time=15829 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=12 ttl=64 time=14830 ms
...
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=25 ttl=64 time=1846 ms
#Switched back to terminal
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=26 ttl=64 time=846 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=27 ttl=64 time=1.29 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.1: icmp_seq=28 ttl=64 time=1.28 ms
Similar behavior occurs with all window managers (including failsafe)
Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening or how I can gather more information about it?
