Apparently smc2835w made in china isn`t supportet by the prism54 driver. So I tryed with ndiswrapper. It installs well and $ndiswrapper -l shows:
Installed ndis drivers:
smc2835w driver present, hardware present
But when I modprobe ndiswrapper dmesg says:
ndiswrapper (KeGetCurrentThread:1661): couldn't find thread for task cfa8e020
ndiswrapper version 1.4rc3 loaded (preempt=no,smp=no)
ndiswrapper: driver smc2835w (SMC,12/14/2004, 3.3.12.1) loaded
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:03:00.0[A] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
ndiswrapper: using irq 10
ndiswrapper (setup_device:1662): couldn't get mac address: C0010011
ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper_add_pci_device:227): couldn't setup network device
ndiswrapper: probe of 0000:03:00.0 failed with error -22
My guess is that it is some incompatibility between ndiswrapper and the windows driver. If there are other Windows drivers available (like for Win2000 rather than XP) it might be worth a go. A version of that card is listed in the ndiswrapper wiki. I'd try the driver they point to. If that doesn't work, try dropping back a version or two of ndiswrapper. I'm not a big fan of the rc versions, so I'd suggest starting with 1.2.
It was the driver that was suggested on the list I used. However I went back to 1.1 and it works like a charm.
I heard many people suggest the same thing. It`s wierd that there are so many bugs in the latest versions.
I've seen this a bunch of times with ndiswrapper. They seem to put out rc versions that aren't really up to snuff, then a stable version comes along that is fine. Personally, I wish they would make a stronger distinction between the rc versions and the stable versions. As is, they keep pushing the rc versions as if they were stable.
